Story Telling and Victorian Collections
November 11, 2015 @ 9:00 pm - November 12, 2015 @ 3:00 am
Victorian Collections is a free, online cataloguing system especially created for small museums in Victoria. This workshop offers a full day of training, beginning with basic collection management. By the end of the day each participant will have photographed and catalogued an item from their organisation’s collection using the Victorian Collections system.
Each organisation should aim to send at least 2 or 3 people to the training. This will spread the load of cataloguing, distribute the experience and make cataloguing an easier and more pleasant experience. Please bring a collection item for each person attending the training.
The afternoon:
The Culture Victoria website celebrates the richness and diversity of Victoria through our collections. The core of Culture Victoria is our stories – themed narratives featuring items from collections that articulate the meaning and context of, and between, collections (and organisations).
This workshop will provide a brief introduction to Culture Victoria, and how we use stories and storytelling to explore the people, places and events that have shaped Victoria.
We will then have a facilitated session with Malcolm McKinnon, a renowned social history documentary & multi-media maker who has created numerous stories for Culture Victoria over the years.
Malcolm will explore how to identify and tell the key stories in your collection. He will look at what works in the online space, and give some simple examples of how to create online stories which are achievable for community collecting organisations.
