Close up and Action Stations – Screening
January 1, 1970 @ 10:00 am
We celebrate the beginning¬† of our 2013 year by having ‘A Special Supper’ and screening¬† one of those superb Royal Navy DVDs’. These were supplied to us by our good friend ,David Mc Fall of the Maritime Model Museum Mona Vale, and it would be a great pity not¬† to share¬† this treat, and so we are designating it as a ‘Bring a Friend’ Meeting!!
NHS Meeting detail for February 2013.
Presentation Date:
Monday 25th February 2013 at the MNC South Yarra.
Part three of the ‘Episodes of the Royal Navy Films’ is entitled: ‘CLOSE UP ACTION STATIONS’.
In 1976 HMS Ganges passed for ever into history, and this episode opens with a brief look back at its parade ground, playing fields etc. and a ceremonial climbing of the infamous mast, followed by more parades, divisions and training routines at COLLINGWOOD and EXCELLENT. The film features rare views of the mine sweepers going about their dangerous tasks; the perils of east coast and channel convoys, actually seen under attack, filmed from Fleet and Hunt class destroyers. Of special interest to our members who fought in the ‘Dakar’ operation are the films shot from HMS BARHAM ,as she was heavily engaged and taking in tow the torpedoed RESOLUTION, together with further coverage taken by an aircraft from ARK ROYAL! There are views of our AUSTRALIA, plus DEVONSHIRE, FAULKNOR,FORSIGHT and ESCAPE. Our HMAS Perth and some of our Scrap iron ‘flotilla ‘are shown, plus shots of the bombardment of Bardia .We join Admiral Cunningham in the Med; view the first ANZAC troop convoy and have a unique view of Queen Mary in the Indian Ocean during 1940.
What a superb combination, great fellowship, fabulous supper, and good film!! Bring your friend and share a great night at the Melbourne Naval Centre.146 W Toorak Road South Yarra. It is opposite Fawkner Park. Some parking at rear plus Toorak Road! The MNC is open from approx. 1830 to facilitate use of the library. Meeting begins at 1930.
