The Annual General Meeting of MHHV was held last Wednesday 4th September 2024. You can see the names of the new and continuing office bearers on the “About us” page of this website.
Under the continuing patronage of General Jim Barry and Professor Peter Edwards we are a team of enthusiastic amateur history buffs who have had, year after year, a very successful program of talks and conferences and maintained a website full of relevant information about events, articles and book reviews. During this year, we have had a very successful 2-day conference in April called “Game of Dominoes” which focussed our thoughts on the part Australia played in the Cold War and the effects it had on our country. On 16th November, we will be presenting a one-day conference on the contribution of Australians in the WW2 campaign in Burma. This conference Is derived from a book on the subject, In the Fight, edited by two of our members Andrew Kilsby and Daryl Moran, which will be launched on 17th November at the Shrine of Remembrance. Details of this conference can be found on the website and you are cordially urged to register and attend. We also conduct a series of Zoom based talks on matters of interest often by the author of a newly published book. These take place every 6 weeks and are, of course, advertised on the website.
Our plans for next year’s program will follow a similar pattern. We are considering an April conference on the topic of enemy activity in Australia during WW2 and in November we will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of WW2 with a conference on the last days of the war and post war reconstruction. Details will follow when we firm up topics and speakers. The zoom talks will also continue with the first to be in mid-February.
As you can see we have been satisfied with the kinds of activities we have conducted because they have worked for us but we are open to new ideas from members (or indeed anyone interested) for topics to fit into our usual activities or for events/activities that break new ground. We are happy to hear from any of our members or visitors to this website through the contact details provided.
A quick word of introduction since I am only days into the presidency of this august body. I have a long-sustained interest in reading military history which I channelled into an MA in Military History at ADFA (2014-2018). I was an officer in the Army Reserve from 1967 to 1994, serving in artillery units, up to CO of 2/15 Field Regiment RAA, and in officer training posts. I am looking forward to leading a very talented team on the MHHV Committee through more years as successful as the first fourteen have been under the expert leadership of Colonel Marcus Fielding to whom this organisation owes a great debt of gratitude.
