About the authors
Paul R. Hare’s interest in aviation was first aroused by a Sunday School outing to London Airport (as Heathrow was then known) when he was about 10 years old. A retired engineer, Paul has made a lifelong study of early aviation, becoming widely recognised as a leading authority in his field, and has publishing several books and numerous magazine articles describing various aspects of the first war in the air, with particular emphasis on the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough and its products. He first began researching this speciality over 45 years ago and in addition to his published writings he has often lectured on the topic both in the UK and the USA. Membership of the Air Scouts Organisation during his teenage years afforded Paul numerous opportunities for flying, in both gliders and powered aircraft and during his twenties he was an Instructor with an Air Training Corps Squadron. More recently Paul has served on the boards of a number of aviation museums and related organisations and has acted as a technical consultant on a number of replica building and restoration projects worldwide. He is a now a regular contributor to the Journal of Cross and Cockade International, the association of aviation historians, and has written the well-known work Fokker Fodder – a study of the development of the BE2 lineage.

A lifelong interest in the history of early aviation started for Andrew with the usual introductions: Biggles, Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, Airfix modelling, Profile Publications’ titles covering World War One aircraft, and, of course, visits to the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden, Bedfordshire. Despite migrating to Australia, having a family and a career as a graphic designer his interest never waned and he now has a deep involvement volunteering with aviation museums, providing graphic design services and designing books for enthusiast-researchers. In 2006, with the forthcoming centenary of military aviation in Australia, an opportunity presented itself for Andrew to fulfill his ultimate dream of constructing a B.E.2a as a gift to the Royal Australian Air Force’s museum at Point Cook, near Melbourne. This exhibit was to complete the collection of the three original types of training aircraft used by the Australian Army from 1914 and to contribute to the centenary celebrations marking the first military flight, on the 1st of March, 2014.During the seven-year build, a pen-pal relationship with Paul Hare culminated in their meeting face-to-face for the first time in 2019, where it was quickly decided that, with their combined knowledge of the aircraft type, a book, specifically describing every B.E.2a that was thought to exist, was too good an opportunity not to pursue.
